"steve rogers is evil" au

her aunt, peggy, didn't really talk about her time in the war much to her. occasionally, while the rain paddled on the window and after all the cookies were made, sharon was able to get her aunt to tell her a little about it; get her to show some war footage of men dressed up to die for their countries and some old photographs with the edges frayed and coloured with age. sharon always thought that her aunt was hiding something though. stories never felt complete, as if someone or something was missing, and it seemed like peggy had to remember to purposely omit a name or say "and" a name earlier.
it wasn't until sharon was nine and peggy had died in a car accident -- leaving all her possessions to her --, that she found out about captain america. reading from her aunt's diaries, she became aware of the failed super soldier project and peggy's role in it. steve rogers, peggy wrote, was one of the finest men she had ever met; he also happened to be one of the most disappointing. he was so good and brave and was handed such greatest, only to throw it away. peggy didn't go into much detail of what happened to steve rogers -- only that he was deemed a traitor by her commanding officers --, but sharon assumed that it was hard for peggy to write about it, even years later.
inspired by these tales and her aunt, sharon trained her body and mind to physical and mental perfection. when she turned eighteen, a mysterious, minor department of the government contacted her. joining, sharon became agent 13. even when you're a shield field agent, you can barely get any information deemed top secret to you, so sharon's knowledge of captain america and steve rogers was still limited to her aunt's diaries. eventually, though, she had her eye/hand coordination genetically engineered tenfold, giving her the reflex skills of snake on five hour energy.
after a decade of service, she finally met steve rogers. using a hydra and a hulk attack as a decoy, he stole the tesseract from the helicarrier; sharon was able to intercept him, however, and after a brief scuffle between the two, shield captured steve and got the tesseract back. sharon briefly interrogated him; sharon finding out that he has been free from the ice for almost three months, that this was his first foray back, and that he was willing to give up information for her identity, while steve found out that she was related to peggy carter, his love. as steve was being flown to a more secured holding location, he and sharon became stranded on a deserted island, after he tried to take control of the airplane. sharon had a case of amnesia and was under the delusion that she was steve's girlfriend before she listened to the black box recording of the events and regained her memories.
a few months later, steve was able to take control of the united states, what he had always wanted. he had decided to execute the avengers (sans thor) and the higher-ups of shield; that was until sharon stepped in and offered her hand in marriage in exchange for the lives and protection of them. she was aware of his desire, almost neediness of her, and decided that her life was miniscule in comparison of what was at stake here. of course, when it came time to consummate the marriage, sharon was nothing but difficult and defiant. after failing to get what he wanted (i.e. sharon), steve decided that he had to brainwash her. with the help of dr. faustus, he replaced the last decade of her life with memories of her and him together at hydra and implanted a deep love for him in her.
the morning after the operation, they made love for the first time.
over a month afterwards, sharon found out that bruce banner (the hulk) was being held at laboratory facility 21b, where experiments were being performed on him. she confronted steve with this information, although he denied it, stating that they were only "supposed to be helping him fix it" and that the scientists weren't supposed to hurt him. all of this were lies, of course; while steve did want to reverse what had happened to banner, he had no regard to how it was done. sharon only relented on the subject when he said that he'd let banner go free (according to her requests). later that night, she found out she was pregnant and told steve. at first steve was ecstatic at the news, thinking that he was happy; when they began to get intimate, however, sharon whispered to him that she'd "love [him] no matter what." that caused steve to stop and rethink what he had done to sharon; he felt shameful and bitter that he had to resort to this to get someone to love him and why didn't no one love him for him? furthermore, how could he do this to someone he loved (as he now came to the conclusion that he would love sharon no matter what); he decided that there was nothing he could do and, besides, she was happy and that was all that mattered to him. on the other hand, sharon was worried about, firstly, what she had said and what had caused steve to become unresponsive and a little depressed; then, she became worried about their child. would he or she inherit the super solider serum, and to what degree? would they come out deformed because of it? this and the normal motherhood fears plagued her.
fourteen weeks later, sharon and steve discovered they were having twins, a boy and a girl. they decided to name the boy, james cornelius rogers, and the girl, margaret sarah rogers. eight months into the pregnancy, the avengers and shield were finally able to retake the united states and bring down steve. in the final moments of a tense stand-off between, tony stark, nick fury, and steve, sharon shot steve in the gut, finally regaining her real memories. he died knowing that sharon hated him and that his country was lost.
after the brainwashed failed and she killed her husband, steve rogers, sharon fell into a deep depression. no longer was she worried that her children would come out, physically deformed; she was more worried that they would be as twisted and evil as their father was. as she was already too far in her pregnancy to have an abortion, sharon had no other choice but to give birth to children, whose father so many hated. indeed, she was prepared to hate her children, prepared to give them up without a second thought. that was until she gave birth to them. she saw no hint of the wickedness and negativity that was deep-rooted in their father. instead, she saw a new beginning, and a new hope. unfortunately, sharon knew that she wouldn't be able to raise her children to the best of her ability; she was in a profession that didn't allow her to love anyone or anything; they strike at that. so, she was forced to give them up to shield (they proceeded to separate them and give them to four former shield agents, posing as their "aunt and uncle"). before that, though, she was able to bestow them their names; harrison montag carter and antigone carter.
seven years pass... nick fury retired and he named sharon carter as the new director of shield. of course, the name "nick fury" had taken a life of its own and, by that time, the name had the power to move mountains and stop oceans. knowing this, sharon took the code-man "nick fury". she hadn't seen her children since she gave them up; only seeing them through pictures and film. she knew that she can't risk seeing them. that, even though steve was dead and hydra, for all intents and purposes, was disbanded, there was always the risk that they could get hurt. instead, she is relegated to the shadows, silently pulling strings over their lives.
the children are doing good, though; they are much stronger, more agile, smarter, and, in every which way, better than their peers. as is common with adopted children, they ask their "aunt and uncle" about their parents sometimes. their aunt and uncle don't tell them the truth, of course; harry and antigone doesn't need to know of their father. instead, they are told that their father, steve carter, died fighting when hydra came into power, and their mother died giving birth to them. it was stressed, though, that their parents were very good people and that they have goodness inside them. they have the choice to either use or reject that goodness. perhaps, they will use that power more wisely than their father did.
